The Day Arrives! Apple Announces new iPhone 4S

This day has been anticipated since about April this year.  Apple is finally announcing their new iPhone line and should be announcing the release date of iOS 5.0.

The event began with a more subdued, understated presentation from Tim Cook, the newly endorsed CEO of Apple, Inc.  Tim has a different style than Steve did, which is good as he needs to define himself uniquely.  As per formula, the presentation always begins with an overview of their product line and Apple retail stores.  Focus is being given on the Shanghai and Hong Kong stores.  Shanghai had 100,000 visitors the opening weekend!

Lion OS X has been immensely successful for Apple.  They have reached over 80% adoption of the new OS with 10% of the installed based of Mac users installing Lion within two weeks of launch.  Comparatively, it took Microsoft 20 weeks to get that adoption rate with the installed based of Windows users for Windows 7.

Apple reports a five year, year over year growth of 23% in the PC / Mac sales compared to an industry average of 4%. This translates to a 23% market share for all shipments of PCs.  In the SmartPhone area, Apple reports a 125% year over year growth compared to all other competitors at 7r%.

The iPad has been making tremendous inroads into Corporations with a 92% adoption rate, where Fortune 500 companies have either deployed or are in the process of deploying.

iOS 5.0 will be officially released on October 12, 2011 and a number of new applications and features will be also forthcoming from Apple.  The first is Cards.  This is Apple’s answer to Hallmark.  With this app, you can pick and create a card for any event, order through AppStore and Apple will professionally print and ship your card to any recipient in the world.  $2.99 for within the United States and $4.99 worldwide.  Additionally, you receive a push notification when your card has been delivered.  The second new application from Apple is Friends and Family.  This is a GPS based app that will permit you to share your location with friends and family and provide them the ability to locate you.

A number of additional background updates were provided on iPod Nano, iPod Touch and iPad.  Nothing earth shattering here.

Apple finally opened the curtains on the new iPhone, officially dubbed, iPhone 4S.  It looks pretty much exactly like the current iPhone 4 but on the inside is completely new.  It comes with a dual-core A5 processor which delivers twice the CPU processing power and seven times the graphics performance.

The amazing thing though is that even with this increased performance and capability, the battery life has also been improved.

The key factors that the iPhone 4S will bring to the table;

  • Dual-Core A5 processor
  • 16GB / 32GB and 64GB Flash Memory options
  • 8MP Camera with F2.4 / quick response shutter
  • 1080P Video Recording
  • Dual antenna system to simultaneously send and receive
  • Effectively twice the data download speed using HSPA based networks
  • World Phone – supports both CDMA and GSM
By far though, the most compelling feature and revolutionary step forward was with the introduction of Siri – the personal assistant.  Siri is based on an acquisition that Apple made back in 2010.  It is the first effective and useful implementation of speech recognition and artificial intelligence.  You are able to effectively ‘talk’ to your iPhone and instruct it to perform a variety of functions, such as report on the weather forecast, book an appointment, remind you to call your wife when you leave work and provide recommendations for local restaurants.  The interaction with Siri was seamless and amazing.  It ‘learns’ your habits and preferences and is even able to read back text / iMessages to you handsfree.  You can interact with Siri in context with what you are currently doing, an example being responding to an iMessage with an answer for a luncheon appointment.
There was certainly disappointment that the iPhone 5 (rumoured) did not appear.  Based though on what was released, I’m really not sure what the iPhone 5 would have offered the world compared to the 4S.  The design of the iPhone 4 remains as one of the best designs in the market.  With the internal improvements of the 4S, this will remain a very hot device for Apple in the next year or so.  Additionally, with the pricing announced today, there really does not appear to be a logical place to put another iPhone.
The iPhone 3GS will be provided free of charge through various providers.  The iPhone 4 will be configured with 8GB of Flash and will sell for $99.  The iPhone 4S will come in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB Flash memory options and will sell for $199, $299 and $399 respectively.
