Apple Announces iPhone OS 4.0

Apple iPhone OS 4 EventApple announced the new developer preview / sneak peak of the latest OS for the iPhone today and as expected, it includes full support for multitasking third party applications.

Steve Jobs states, ‘We weren’t the first to this party, but we’re going to be the best, just like copy-and-paste. It’s really easy to implement it in a way that really drains battery life. Easy to do it in a way that reduces the performance of the foreground app and makes the phone feel sluggish.’

Scott Forstall, Sr. Vice-President iPhone OS reinforces ‘How did we do it? We looked at the tens of thousands of apps in the app store, and distilled down the services those apps need in the background, and then we implemented them all ourselves, in a way that saves the battery. And we’re providing those services as APIs to developers, so developers can add multitasking while the system preserves battery life and performance.

The full list of new features and enhancements:

  • Full multitasking support with the introduction of seven new APIs for developers to efficiently and easily provide multitasking services.
  • Ability to create folders on your iPhone desktop to categorize applications into common folders and save space on your screen
  • Ability to change your wallpaper, both for the lock screen and the background screen
  • Unified Email inbox with support for more than one Exchange account
  • iBooks on the iPhone with support to wirelessly sync page and bookmarks between devices
  • Enhanced support for the Enterprise, including full encryption of all email and attachments using the PIN lock code with support for developers wishing to provide encryption services in their applications through an API
  • Full Enterprise device management including wireless application distribution
  • Support for Exchange 2010
  • Support for SSL VPN for both Cisco and Juniper
  • Enhanced gaming features including full integration of social networking into gaming
  • A new way to fully support integrated ads within applications so that developers can still provide free applications and gain revenue from advertising

The new version of OS support the iPhone 3GS 16GB and 32GB models.Ā  Many features will be support on the iPhone 3G but unfortunately, multitasking will not be supported.
