Well.. the moment is nearly upon us. I can not believe it has arrived. I clearly remember watching the IOC announcement on July 3rd, 2003 and feeling such a sense of pride for my city, my province and my country.
As the final days to the opening ceremonies are upon us, I confess that I am a little perplexed with some of the most recent announcements, the most significant being the announcement that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be running in the torch relay.
Now don’t get my wrong. I respect and like ‘Arnie’ and recognize that he is a successful, intelligent and hard working man. What I have a problem with though is how VANOC can justify giving him this honour when just seven short years ago, the same year Vancouver was announced as an Olympic city he campaigned to stop the movie industry from filming in this beautiful city.
I guess memories are short. That or there are other factors at play that are not obvious.
On a more positive note, it was also announced that Walter Gretzky, Julie Payette and Richard Brodeur will also be running a leg of the relay. Now those are selections that make sense to me.
