Canada vs USA – Anticipation for Gold

The day has arrived and all is as it should be.  Canada and USA are both competing for the mens hockey Gold medal at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.  Canada as per usual takes the hard path to this final giving a number of Canadians heart attacks on their way there.  Today is the time for team Canada to collectively put the claim of “Hockey is Canada’s Game” to the test.

The whole country is glued to their televsion sets.  I have seen various postings on Facebook, tweets on Twitter and other comments on various social networks around this event to know that this is something very big and very important to this country.  The one comment that brought a smile to my face was ‘Attention World – Please be aware that Canada will be closed between the hours of 12pm to 3pm’.

No matter the outcome of today’s game, I am very pleased by a few things;

  1. Roberto Luongo was able to show why he was the best choice to represent team Canada as the starting goalie.  This is his time to shine.
  2. Canada had a very decisive win over team Russia.  This game was so hyped and Canada quickly put an end to the smack talk about Ovechkin vs Crosby.
  3. Canada has really come together as a team the last few games.  The lines are working well together and the ‘regular’ players are the ones that are producing.

This event is going to be one of those that people will talk about for years to come.  Just like the 1972 Summit Series, this hockey finale will be long remembered.  Even more important, these 2010 Winter Olympics have been such an amazing event for Canada that there are those saying never before has the country come together and displayed their pride and patriotism as they are now.  Today, it is cool to be Canadian!
