Canada vs Slovakia – A Reflection

Now that was a hockey game!

Slovakia indeed was the dark horse when it came to these Olympics.  Even though they are rated 8th in the world, I believe they are a lot stronger and better than they may be given credit for.  The first two periods clearly were owned by Canada, who outshot and outplayed Slovakia.  The third period though was a very different story.  Wake a sleeping giant and look out!  Slovakia recognizing that their opportunity to get into the Gold medal game was diminishing came on strong and furious.  Finally, Roberto Luongo was able to show the world why he was the right choice for team Canada.

The last three minutes of the third period had a country on their feet and biting their nails!  Rarely can I recall a whole country given a collective sigh of relief and a simultaneous roar when the whistle finally blew signifying the end.

Tonight, Slovakia will go on to play against Finland.  They are hungry and they want to be on the medal podium.  Finland is definitely going to have their hands full with this talented group of players.  Mikka Kiprursoff better show up tonight and play with inspiration if Finland is going to have any chance at all.

The game tomorrow between Canada and USA is exactly as it should be.   A classic ending to an amazing series.  Let’s hope that the men come to the game with the same character, grit and tenacity as the women did with their gold medal victory.
